Rusty

Practice makes perfect. Lack of practice...makes for a poor blogger. It's been too long since I've blogged, and I have definitely gotten rusty. Which is a shame, because I have projects to talk about. Yes, I do.

Today, I'm just going to start with the sweater I made for my husband. I had been inspired to make it by Jared Flood's Big Blue, and I decided to name it after my husband's favorite physicist, Richard Feynman, in the hopes of inspiring him to actually wear it. (What, you don't have a favorite physicist?).

I had never made a saddle-shoulder garment before, much less a seamless one. Boy have I been missing out! This is a really fun construction! The knitting itself--just ribbing and stockinette--was mundane but relaxing. Some of you may recall that I had actually finished the knitting some time ago, but then I got hung up on sewing in the zipper. It should not have been a big deal at all because I used to sew like mad, but I was waaaayyyy out of practice. It has been about 10 years since I have sewn on a regular basis, and it showed. For example, I broke a needle because I set the zigzag setting on the machine too wide. And then after I replaced the needle, it kept skipping stitches. It took me the longest time before I realized it was because I was using a needle meant for knit fabrics rather than one meant for woven fabrics, and the blunt tip of the needle could not penetrate the dense fabric backing of the zipper. In the end, though, I did manage to slog through.

More pics and construction notes are on Ravelry and in the gallery.
