Double the Pleasure

I brought my double-knit scarf along with me on a recent trip. Even though it involved 2 balls of yarn, they were of course incredibly light and compact to pack. I didn't need to bring a pattern because it's easy to memorize. Even if I had forgotten, I could easily "read" the pattern repeats I had already done like a chart.

Once I got back into the rhythm of knitting this scarf, it was pretty fun. I held the 2 yarns in separate hands. While it's not necessary to do this, it was easier to shuttle them back and forth without getting them tangled and stuck to each other this way, especially given the nature of Kidsilk Haze.

There's an idea that's been bubbling around in my head for a different scarf design ever since I took Lucy Neatby's double knitting class at Madrona 2 years ago, but I haven't worked on it at all. Since I have plenty of KSH left over, I might swatch something. We'll see.

The Big Chill

Hey, remember my KSH double knit scarf? No? Don't feel bad. I barely remembered it myself. I stuck this thing in the freezer back in November because I had made a mistake on it and knew from past experience that that helps a bit.


Here we are 4 months later, and I finally took it out because I needed an easy travel project. The time spent in the cold may have made it just a little easier to frog, but mostly I think it just made the yarn smell funny!

On Ice

Hi, Everyone! Thank you all for the nice comments and all the Ravelry hearts on Baudelaire. The weather finally turned cool enough around here for me to wear it a couple of times, and I'm very pleased.

I'm sorry about the long blog absence. It's been nonstop around here, and I haven't gotten much knitting in. On a recent trip, I did manage to resurrect a WIP: my double knit scarf. The problem was that I made a mistake when I logged my needle size into Ravelry. I put that I had used a size 5 when I actually used an 8! It's been so long since I worked on this project that I didn't realize my mistake until I looked down and saw that my stitches were a lot smaller than they had been. Oops!


In truth, I think I like how it looks on size 5s better, but not enough to start from scratch. Right now, the scarf is in the freezer. Several years ago, I read that it's easier to frog Kidsilk Haze if you freeze it first, and that tip has seemed to work before.

I really am trying to stick to my plan of finishing up some WIPs before casting on more things, but I don't know if I can pull it off. Meanwhile, I've got some other non-knitting things to share with you in the coming days.

Meet Me in St. Louis

I was in St. Louis a couple of weeks ago and had a great time! I had hoped to meet Yo-El, but it turns out we temporarily switched states. She was in Texas while I was there, but she was kind enough to provided some LYS recommendations. The only one I actually made it to was the Kirkwood Knittery. It was a nice store and had a good selection. I came away with 3 skeins of



Habu A-60 Sosenshi Paper. To be honest, I'm not entirely sure what I'll do with it. I'm intrigued by Waverly, Gretel, and the Chinese Style Pullover. And look, someone crocheted a Queen Anne's Lace scarf with it! We'll see. (These are all Rav links)

Now, I usually try to plan ahead so that I'll have a good project to take with me, but I was so busy in the weeks before the trip that I got caught flat-footed. I ran out of time and had to scramble that morning to quickly pack something. Even though it would probably be okay, I don't like risking bringing metal (which meant no lace needles and no crochet hooks). It needed to be a project that was not difficult and that would not require calculations, making a swatch, or having to wind yarn. Naturally, I had nothing on hand that met those requirements, so I started this scarf from my queue. It's the double-sided scarf by Erica Schleuter in the Spring/Summer '09 issue of Knit.1. The scarf is double-knit with KSH. I can't say that moving 2 strands of mohair back and forth between the needles wasn't a bit fiddly, but it was very relaxing to do.
